Learning Workshop
Small groups explore centers during a period called 'Learning Workshop.' Learning Workshop - which was created by my CT and is a somewhat modified version of The Daily 5 - allows students to rotate among 6 different centers. Some of these include:
- Listening Center: Students follow along to a book-on-tape. This activity encourages fluency practice for all readers, and it also serves as a tool for students to read rich texts that might be above their reading levels. At the end of the story, the "leader" of the group facilitates a book club discussion by reading questions about book characteristics that are appropriate for most narrative including: Who are the characters, what's the problem, etc.
- Computer Center: Students take turns working on different math activities.

- Word Work: Students read short articles and answer questions based on these articles.
- Poetry, Plays, and Books: Students practice seasonally-appropriate plays and poetry and perform them for different teachers. This builds strong group work practices, and boosts confidence to speak and read in front of others.
- Math Activities: The EDM Program includes several different games (i.e. Addition Top-It, Fraction Top-It, Money Exchange) to reinforce concepts. At the math center, students continue to reinforce math skills in a fun and interactive way.
- Art Center/Work on Writing: Students let their creative energies flow by working on different seasonally-appropriate projects. Students also write stories about their pictures or various prompts.
